Maths - Curriculum Intent
The intent of the mathematical experience at Oakbank is to develop students with a conceptual understanding of mathematics who are able to make connections between different concepts, display fluent problem-solving skills by recognising patterns and rules, ask and answer open-ended questions, and communicate fluently using appropriate mathematical terminology and symbols. With these goals in mind, lessons are broken down into small steps that gradually develop each year to provide a seamless journey from primary through to A-Level. During students’ 5 years at Oakbank, they will all follow the same small steps, with additional higher small steps embedded for those aiming for the top grades and additional supporting statements for any lower ability students. Each lesson, we will encourage students to consider various ways of working out the same question, including abstract, concrete and pictorial representations. Students at Oakbank will see these different representations from year 7 and will continue to use these through to year 11, thus making it a part of their every lesson structure. Topics and National curriculum content, is built upon each year, and interleaving is embedded within our teaching to encourage better recall and retention of previously taught skills. For example; below demonstrates how this can be seen in our schemes. Within the number strand, Rounding is seen in year 7, and progresses in to year 8. It is then revised in year 9, before being developed further into upper and lower bounds and truncating in KS4. Rounding is then incorporated as a core skill, in to many areas of the curriculum, e.g. through Geometry, when calculating the area, volume and surface area of a shape.
